Where My Girls At?
While I was looking forward to taking a voice class this past weekend, the cancellation did give me the chance to head back to the U of O for some Women's Volleyball action. Last year, I was the game PA and it seems I'll be able to do the same this year.
I'm excited!
First of all, the volleyball coach was one of my favorites at the university. Second of all, the girls are awesome. They are a very strong team and they work well together. And finally, I'm a Gee-Gee though and through and I love having this opportunity to keep supporting them.
Growing up, I was never any good at volleyball. I sucked at serving and I always hurt my hands. But I really love watching it. I don't know why. There's something about it that I find even more captivating than hockey or basketball.
Maybe it's because the games take place in a gym instead of a cold arena. Or maybe it's because everything can be done in an hour and a half. Or maybe I just love the cameraderie I see from this team and wish that I could be a part of it.
That's probably it. I have ball envy :p
Anyway, the rules for volleyball are different from when they would show you how to play different sports in gym class. For one thing, the points now go to 25 instead of 15 and you can get a point even if the other team was serving.
Sadly enough, that's pretty much the extent of my volleyball knowledge. I don't really know what any of the moves are called so I don't comment on them during the game. I do pick up a term here or there and I throw it in when appropriate, but otherwise my job consists plugging university sponsors, playing the music (the one CD they've got) and announcing who is the next player to serve. (If it's a GG, I extend every vowel in their name and make it sound super enthusiastic. If it's the other team, I try and make it sound neutral... maybe even a little depressed. Ya, I'm lame, I know.)
I'm pretty good at it though. I find I have a decent announcer voice and I can do everything in both languages which is key at the U of O. I look forward to the rest of the season with this team.
So far, we're off to a good start. The girls are 2-0. Next home game will be November 11th against the evil Toronto Blues (hisssss)

Oh, this coming from the guy who did not want a picture taken of me kissing his cheek for his wife's sake.
What would she think about this one?
Come to think of it, have you told her how you picked up a rocking granny yet?
