Endless Plateaus

Ever feel like you're finally getting somewhere in your life, like you're actually making progress only to realize that you've just come up on some random plateau and there's a heck-of-alot of mountain left to climb?

I've been feeling that way a lot this past weekend.

Everytime I feel like I'm getting somewhere with my career, reality slaps another mountain top in the way.

I was shit in my acting class this weekend.

The first thing out of the instructor's mouth when passing on individual advice was that I could do better. And no one is going to do it for me.

So why do I insist on making the climb any harder than it already is?

  • I experienced a lot of feeling like I was getting nowhere with my playing in university. Really, since I started playing I've felt like that a lot. My flute teacher in uni told me that when you feel like all your efforts are for naught, that's when you're doing your best work. Your most effective learning. I don't know whether it's true or not, but he was very smart when it came to music, and it gave me the courage to carry on through those crappy crappy times.

Don't worry Nance, just keep at it.

  • I just found a particularly relevent quote on another blog:

"The best thing that can come with success is the knowledge that it is nothing to long for." -- Liv Ulmann

  • Feel that all the time. But there's always gonna be obstacle after obstacle. It never ends. And you can't get to new bigger ones without facing their predecessors. It's the endless cycle.

You can be proud that you completed the course and learned something from it.
