The purpose of a stand-in
This past weekend, I ended up shooting what amounts to being 4 short films (2 in English and then the same in French). I had a great time, but I learned something important.
Back, when I worke don H20 for the CBC, I was really confused as to why the lead actors would need stand-ins. A stand-in is basically someone who will "stand in" for the actor on their mark while the cameras and lights are adjusted. I just couldn't understand why you wouldn't just do it yourself. It's not like it's that hard to just be there and wait. Now I know why. When you're trying to remember your script and get into the moment, it's very hard to break out of that and wait until the cameras are ready. Since I was working on a low budget short, there were no stand-ins, and although not that much trouble, it did get hard after a while.
So, I guess I learned first hand how important stand-ins can be to the focus of the actor and to the production in general.
