An Incredible Peepshow
Last night I witnessed something very special. I had two free tickets for Peepshow, a part of the NAC's French Studio series, and, since I had just had lunch with her the day before, I brought Natasha with me.
It's very hard for me to find the right words to describe what I saw. The best thing the two of us were able to come up with was a very simple Wow!
This one-woman show (written, directed and performed by Marie Brassard) is what all theatre should aspire to be. It was moving, it was touching, it was disturbing, and funny, and visceral and beautiful. It incorperated sound distortion, video multi-media, and incredible lighting effects. Every movement was slow and deliberate and helped move the stories forward. Every storyline weaved and intertwined into one another and kept you in an almost dreamlike state. I could not tear my eyes away from this woman!
I hate throwing this word around, but please know that I am not doing it lightly. It was quite simply perfect.
Last night, I saw art in its purest and truest form and it made my heart ache. I don't know if I will ever experience something quite like that again. If I could make people feel once ounce of what I felt last night watching this performance, as an artist, I would be happy.
I don't know how many of you understand French well enough to follow an entire play, but if you can, I urge you to go out and see this show. You will not regret it.
