The Queen of Community Theatre

At the end of rehearsal today, the assistant director for my OLT show approached me and gave me the script for another show in the fall. Auditions are in June and she would like me to try out.

Now I must say that I am flattered, BUT (and you knew there was one coming) I'm getting kind of frustrated at how easy it's been to get a part in a community theatre production. It's not that I don't like getting parts (because I definately like performing); I just wish the NAC or the GCTC were calling me to ask me to audition. You know, something that might actually pay me if I got a part.

Gosh, I feel kinda snobby right now. I mean, I haven't even read this Norm Foster script she lent me yet and here I am talking like I've already been given the part.

I'm not even sure what I was trying to express here. I really don't have a reason to complain. Then again, I'm not looking forward to calling my mom to tell her I might be doing another "freebie"

  • I can't tell you how many free and low-paying gigs I've done. I think Julie's right: you have to pay your dues before you get what you really deserve.

  • True - but there comes a point when a you have to choose a focus. If you're too busy doing community theatre to focus on the more professional gigs you want, you run the risk of hurting yourself. "Getting what you deserve" is a wonderful karmic frustration. :)
