So you want to be an actor?

So what do you do?

You know the conversation. You run into someone you haven't seen in a while (and who doesn't read your blog :p) and they ask you that fateful question: "So what do you do now that (insert random event here) is over?"

And my answer is always this: "I work for the University of Ottawa, but only until April, because that's when my contract ends."

"Oh that's too bad. Can't they keep you on?/What are you going to do after?"

So I give them my brightest smile and I say: "I'm going to be an actor!"

And that's when I get the look. You know the look. It's the same look you give any 5 year old when they tell that when they grow up they will be Prime Minister of Canada. That patronizing half-smile that seems to say isn't that nice and yeah right all in the same glance.

Sigh

No, I'm not a waitress. No, I'm not friends with anyone famous, although I've run in to quite a few. Most of the actors I know have blogs linked to this site, check them out. This guy has been having some wonderful adventures lately. Yes, if I get there, I'll give your regards to Broadway. No, I'm not planning on moving to LA anytime soon. And unless you're my sister, I'm not buying you a car when I make my first million because you're sorta being a condescending jerk right now.

Cheers!

  • Hey, at least you didn't move to Vancouver with no acting experience and/or training in the hope that you would somehow magically become an actor. You're way better off than some people I used to know...
