How Girls Play Sports

Darcy and I joined a co-ed intramural Ultimate team at the University. It was my first time playing the game and I wasn't too familiar with all the rules, so I was a little nervous when we headed down. Once there, however, I saw how easy and laid back the game was and actually had a lot of fun.

Unfortunately, since it's co-ed, you have to have three girls on the field at all times. At the moment, we only have three girls on the team. Oh well, I need the cardio exercise.

Throughout the game, I did notice a few key differences between the way guys and girls both take on sports.

For instance, on a co-ed team, guys will not pass to a girl unless he has absolutely exhausted every possible male alternative.

Also, when guys are playing, they don't usually talk; no words of encouragement, only the occasional grunts and "go long"

Here's a word for word recap of what happened with the blond girl from the opposing team who was guarding me:

Blond Girl: Oh my God! Are you wearing Lululemon pants?

*block block block - dodge dodge dodge*

Me: Yeah

*more blocking and/or dodging*

Blond Girl: I LOVE Lululemon!

Me: Me too! And they're (the pants) reversible!

*block/dodge*

Blond Girl: No way!

*both run off to catch the disc*

I look forward to next week

  • What the hell are lululemon pants? What a strange name.
*start rant* Anyways, what the hell is the point of having co-ed teams if the guys "will not pass to a girl unless he has absolutely exhausted every possible male alternative"? I just don't get it. Maybe it's because it's "coincidentally" the girls that are just not as good, but how are they going to get better if they never get real chances to play?

Of course, this is coming from the girl that used to play baseball with her friends in high school and used to get really ticked off that the guys would move way up when a girl was at bat and waayyyy back when the guys were at bat. Thanks for the encouragement and motivation guys! What's the point in playing with guys if they won't give you a chance? *end rant*

I think you struck a nerve there...

  • Heh

    I see that

Oh, and FYI, lululemon pants are the greatest pants in the world!

  • You have a catch 22 there...

Guys are more competitive and take the sport more seriously, thus try harder. When looking to make a pass, chances are better that there's a guy cutting back and forth trying hard to get open than a girl doing so since she doesn't care THAT much about the game.

The gender division is more or less coincidental. You can't throw the frisbee to someone who isn't open. You don't want to throw the frisbee to somebody who's going to screw up and lose it even if they catch it (less this than the other I think though).

When we played I was actually wondering if the girls would all end up like pylons with only last ditch efforts to pass the disc to them. I don't think it was that bad, lots of times the frisbee was thrown to girls on both teams, although usually they'd be in a cluster of about 12 people so...

But yeah, the people who can catch the frisbee and try to get open are the ones who are being more competitive, which as a general rule will be the guys (not as though this isn't without lots of exceptions, some guys could care less and don't try, some girls are very athletic and competitive and try hard too), but minus the PC - guys are more aggressive on avg.
